exhaust too loud!!

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has had any trouble with the fuzz payin far too much attention to the noise levels coming from there exhaust?

I was takin a slow drive through my towns center last night, sittin in 3rd at about 20mph as the whole town center is cobbled streets, when the police pulled me. Now my exhaust system aint fancy it consists of a home made de-cat pipe (just for the rasp :nod: ) and some kind of peco back box. Now, they took 3 readings and gave me the average which was 95 desables (sp) the lodest being 99. they then took a folder out there car and looked up what a 2.0 astra should read and told me it was 78 desables. this is where I started to get confused, and started to confuse the copper. I asked what engine they were using as a reference as I could think off 3 2.0 vauxhall engines that go into an astra that all sound very different (8V, ecopoo and redtop) they didn't know and assumed they were all the same. They then told me my car was 4 times louder than it should be, EH!! was my response would that not make it closer too a head exploding 400 desables?? after listening to the copper tryin to explain how its worked out for 20mins I just stopped arguing and took my £30 fixed penalty, When I asked how long I had to change th exhaust (this is the best bit) they said I didn't have to??? but if i was stopped another 3-4 times they would persue an ASBO on my car (not me) and have it destroyed. If i dont have to change my exhaust why was I fined?

Now other than havin a rant :sorry: I'm askin if anyone noes what a 2.0 sports reading actually is supposed to be?
 
well iv never ever been stopped for a noise exhaust and also iv never ever heard of that happening before... so why did they fine you, cause the way i see it is if they fined out for the exhaust been too loud for the road, surely they should have issued you with a piece of paper telling you to change it... they do on motorbikes.. so basicly what they have done is fined you let you go hoping to catch you a further 4 times resulting in a further £120 of fines. then to tow your car away to be crushed, resulting in more fines.. iirc £115 just for the tow and £15 a day storage...

i think i would go get some legal advice because for one the coppers sounded like they did not have a clue what they was on about how the hell is 95db 4x louder than standard when standards only 78db :lol:.. 2nd they cant judge every 2lt engine as the same the c20xe (redtop) is a noise beast compaired to the rest..


how high did they ask you to rev your engine btw??
 
I had heard they can do you for havin a loud exhaust. I know that my m8's kit car had to have a reading of 101db before its mot'd and aloud on the road. I've been reading the crap they gave me with the ticket. and to Quote

"You have been issued with a non-endorsable fixed penalty ticket for £30. This is in relation to commiting an offence under regulation 54(2) of the road vehicle (constriction and use) regulations, 1986.

Regulation 54(2) states:

Every exhaust system and silencer shall be maintained in a good and efficent working order and shall not, after the date of manufacture, be altered so as to increase the noise made by the escape of the gasses."

basically you aint allowed anythin other than the standard exhaust, its law. but I dont get it!! If its law why wasn't I told to have it fixed and checked at a mot station, like when my manifold was blowing I was given a producer and told I had so many days to repair it (i cant remember how long) have sum piece of paper stamped at a mot place and hand it in with the producer.

Its only a £30 fine so I'll pay it, It'll be cheaper than a lawyer. I'm just a bit annoyed.
 
I wouldnt pay that if i was you. Seriously. The copper just sounds like a pillock,and had nothing better to do. Id go get some legal advise. If its an UNENDORCABLE fine,then they cant make you pay it!
Il talk to my mum when shes back from holiday,she works for Essex police,so mite be able to help.

they've never anything to do here, thats why they pick on any1 that has a car louder that a fish fart.

Cheers m8 it wud be handy to know more about it. The only thing that bothers me is if I dont pay it they can take you to court and make it an endorsable offence.
 
how would they pick you up, surely your engine must have been just about idle doing 20mph in 3rd
 
Yeah but if you go to Citizens advice,and it drags it out that long,atleast ul have something to back up why its taken you so long to pay. Uv probably got a month,so that should be plenty of time. Just know your rights. Just because they have badges,dont mean they are always right!!
 
What a load of total rollocks!! Besides,even track cars can be 90 something DB round residential areas!! so whats their problem!!

they mesure the sound based on what the car sounded like upon leavin the factory. they say an astra 2.0 should be 78db mines averaged at 94db the loudest being 99db. I just wanna know what engine put out the 78db if its a redtop then mine is way too loud as its an ecopoo but if its an 8valver I could be in with a chance
 
Guys double the volume of 78dB is 84dB
Double that is 90dB

Decibels is a logarithmic not linear scale. +6dB is double the sound pressure level...
Hope that clears a few things up.

nope im till confused i thought double something means exactly that.. like 30 doubled is 60.. so how they come up with those fugures??

Ok, it decible's is a messurement of diffrence between to levels not the level it's self. "1 Decible is the smallest diffrence in sound level a human can dicearn, deciBels (dBs) are a relative measurement derived from two signal levels: a reference input level and an observed output level. A deciBel is the logarithm of the ratio of the two levels"

Formula is dB=10*log(P1/P2)

DeciBels Signal Strength
3dB 2x
6dB 4x
10dB (1 Bel) 10x
20dB 100x
30dB 1,000x
40db 10,000x

Really hard to explain.
Basiclly its more complicated then doube the volume = twice the db.
 
in that equation P1 and P2 are the power levels of two sounds.

cheers, I do kinda get it now.

The only thing that is botherin me now guys n gals, is the fact that the legislation states that its illegal to modify your exhaust. this is sh!t!!! coz cone filters suck on their own and make a god awfall noise when idling.

I'm now very depressed:sad:
 
so why do they sell them, and why are companys allowed to make and fit custon exhausts if its all illegal???

the same way you can buy dope paraphanelia like bongs and pipes ect. it aint illegal untill your usin it
