Hi, i have a late type redtop (apparently) i bought this in a 1994 GSi to replace the one that some kind person wrote off for me with early type engine 1992 GSi.

i can clearly tell that the early type engine is a redtop because it has the dizzy on as it should do,

however the late type engine has confusing features and im stumped a bit...

it has the L-shaped redtop shape on the rocker, but...it had a L shaped cover on it saying eco-tek?

have i been ripped off with an XEV? or am i mistaken?

i thought the eco-teks had a straight cover on it

moreover the part i am looking for 90469769, Hose, Air Cleaner To Airflow Meter, says that it is fitment for XEV!

so confused, please someone shed some light on this, do i simply have a late type XE or did i get bumped?

is it just this...C20XELN

'The later engine were suffixed C20XELN to indicate 'Low Noise' revisions (smaller cylinder head port, cast pistons, and different crank bearing size) in line with EU regulations. The engine has a square bore/stroke and shares piston dimensions with the Bugatti Veyron (86 x 86 mm).' (wikipedia,2012)

look this is the bit i need and its down as XEV?!?!

It's very possible that some parts are shared between the late XE & XEVs, the two engines are very similar, however as yours has a L shaped spark plug cover, it will be an XE, as the XEV only had a straight cover.

thats what i thought jim, cheers, do you know anything about the C20XELN? is that what i have?

and why in gods name did they put ecotek L on a redtop?

I love the way you say "ripped off" because you thought it was a xev and not a redtop? Another person who thinks redtop's are worth there weight in gold and that xev's are the "**** engine" lol

Just look for the engine code on the block,

lol yeah the xev might have been more eco but it aint got 150bhp out the box, and i didnt buy this car for economy. else i would have bought saab aero TD or something like my old work car. however i got this car because of the engine. people make formula 3 race cars with these engines"!

i got mapped at 163bhp last time so trying to work out how i dont have to start again with DIS pack engine you see

why? is it like when the prodigy went a bit...weird

did they lose their minds and think, yeah lets ruin a good thing...and go and find a goat to blow

like taking kylie minoguluogulog and putting myra hindlys face on her just to make it her insurance cheaper??!!

weirdos. il let them off because i have stainless L anyway from J plate Cat C

It was for emissions if your on about the BHP mate... Nothing that cant be reversed though. I highly rate the ecotecs ;)

As Leon said, they purposely restricted the XEV with its exhaust manifold mainly, to meet restrictions and all sort of EU stuff. It's actually a very understated engine, being 137brake, and these engines are capable of in excess of 200brake

This is an on going argument between the XE & XEV owners

If it was a **** engine they wouldn't have used it as a base for the z20let & z20leh would they?

according to wiki its the later version with square bore 86 x 86mm

stronger bottom end for calibras

good stuff, a collector! well the one in question here is 3rd from bottom but i have stainless version of 2nd from top

hooray ebay

i always thought that the xev was the eco ph2 gsi engine and the xe ph1 and cav/calibra engine both good engines xe 150 ish bhp and xev 136 so not much in it. for some reason tho the xev are rarely used to do a conversion

Yep the XE was in the phase 1, and Cavalier & Calibra,

However, the Calibra also had the XEV from about 1995, and possibly the Cav did in its final reincarnation before becoming a Vectra b

The 150brake out of the box expression is fairly wrong, the early XEs had around 157ish but the c20xe had 147ish only 10brake more than an XEV, bearing in mind, the XEVs inlet is different, it has a cast exhaust manifold restricting the power too, a few mods (to take it to XE spec) and all of a sudden it's got more power then the XE... Mr Negative has proved this so have a few others.

but spending the same amount of money on a xe would get even more power ;)
